Herbal milkshakes for breakfast, all around!
Hi there! I’m Joey’s friend, Jessica. I’m neither an herbalist nor a chef. I do however live in Los Angeles, so I consider myself part of of the holistic community--mostly as a bystander.
About three blissful sips into my first piping hot mug of Wild Sun Wellness' Loco Hot Cocoa, I realized that I could turn it into a milkshake. Okay, so the recipe I eventually came up with is technically a smoothie, but it tastes exactly like a chocolatey, creamy, ice cold milkshake. And, BONUS - it’s healthy!
A few notes on the recipe:
-
As with most smoothies, the ingredients can completely be fudged to suit your preferences. That being said, I’ve tweaked this recipe a bunch of times and find that the ingredients I’ve listed below yield the best version. I like my smoothies like my men: thick and spicy, so I add a ton of cinnamon and not much liquid.
-
I drink this smoothie in the morning as a meal replacement, which means it’s pretty heavy on nuts and seeds, so that I don’t have to add protein powder.
-
Lastly, I prefer steamed, frozen cauliflower in my smoothies as a base instead of bananas to cut the sweetness. The already muted flavor of the cauliflower is completely masked by the other ingredients. Also, getting a veggie in first thing in the morning never hurt nobody.
Without further ado, I present to you...
Loco Hot Cocoa Smoothie
Time: 5 minutes
Yield: 8 oz
Here’s what you’ll need:
Blender
1 tbsp. Wild Sun Wellness Loco Cocoa
¼ cup nut milk
½ cup filtered water
1 cup steamed, then frozen cauliflower
½ cup raw walnuts
1-2 large Medjool date(s)
¼ cup plain coconut shreds
1 tbsp. Ground Flax seeds
½ tsp. Cinnamon
1 tbsp. roasted cacao nibs
Here’s What You'll Do:
The hardest part about making this smoothie is gathering all of the ingredients from around the kitchen. Once that’s out of the way it’s pretty easy.
-
First things first, put all of the measured ingredients into the blender. I find it easiest to pour in the liquid first, then the powders, and lastly, the solids so that the blender blade (and you) don’t have to work as hard to combine everything.
-
I use a Vitamix and turn it to the smoothie setting. If you don’t have a Vitamix, you can just mess around with the settings on your blender until you get the consistency of a milkshake. You can do this by gradually turning the speed up on your blender from medium to high over the course of about two minutes. I like everything to be well mixed so I will sometimes run the blender for a few more seconds after the initial whiz.
-
Pour your smoothie into a large glass, sprinkle some coconut shreds and cacao nibs on top, plop in a straw, and take a deep breath. Joey is really good about taking breaths before she starts drinking and eating. I on the other hand, usually finish my meals before I even realize I’ve started. One of the most useful things I’ve picked up from her is the importance of being present and listening to your body (i.e., eating until you’re 80% full, not until the food is gone)--this makes everything taste better.
After you take your breath, enjoy!
Enjoy my favorite morning treat and share it with your friends, they will LOVE it!!
Thanks for reading everyone!
